Roy Irvan Pruett born February 14, 1898
Sadie Caroline Deskins born September 10, 1902 in Wyoming County, West Virginia (near Brier)
Roy and Sadie were married April 30, 1919 in McDowell County, West Virginia (near English)
They lived the majority of their married life on Atwell Mountain in McDowell County, West Virginia. There they had a large farm where they raised food for their family including pigs and cows and chickens. They had a milking barn and a smokehouse. They never owned a vehicle.
Roy worked in the coal mines, farmed and preached the gospel in a small country church called Church of Christ.
Sadie was a homemaker whose abilities included sewing, quilting, crocheting, canning and pickling – all these she passed down to her children.
Everyone who came to that mountain home was welcomed, fed and had a place to sleep for the night if they wanted. Roy and Sadie had love for all those they encountered over the years and had the gift of hospitality.
I have heard and witnessed over the years people who were touched by their love and hospitality and numerous souls who came to know Christ as their Savior while visiting and having the gospel presented to them.
Roy and Sadie loved the Lord and their lives demonstrated this in actions, speech, attitude, giving, helping, love, kindness, mercy and grace shown to all.
The following is a list of their children:
Fred Beryl Pruett born 1920
Delta Doris Pruett born 1922
Eunice Ilene Pruett born 1924
Uba (Euby) Faye Pruett born 1927
Violet Leola Pruett born 1929
Gloria June Pruett born 1931
Ida Lorene Pruett born 1935
Roy Earl Pruett born 1941
James Travis Pruett born 1942
Lucy Ann Pruett born 1944
William Delano Pruett born 1949
Roy died November 24, 1973 at the age of 75 in his home on Atwell Mountain. He was buried in Riffe Cemetery near Atwell Church of Christ.
Sadie died November 1998 at the age of 96 from complications of a hip fracture. She lived to see 50 grandchildren, over 100 great-grandchildren and over 50 great-great children born from her lineage – and they surrounded her in the small country church on that Thanksgiving day when we said our good-byes and buried her. The church could not hold all that came to show their respect so many stood outside and listened to the old hymns as they were sung. Thanksgiving was quite fitting for the day to bury this saint of old – she was full of thanksgiving to God for ALL He had blessed her with and her blessings were abundant.
Matthew 6 says “do not store up yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your heart is, there your heart will be also”.
Roy and Sadie definitely stored up treasure in heaven and treasure will follow them there also.
Revelation 5:8 says And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps and golden vials full of odors, which are the prayers of the saints. Just think- Roy and Sadie still have prayers going up!
